Football Program Overview
Football Program Mission: Developing Players On and Off the Field
Our youth football program is dedicated to nurturing young athletes by teaching the fundamentals of football while instilling core values such as respect, sportsmanship, and perseverance. Our goal is to provide a safe, supportive, and positive environment where players of all experience levels—whether they are rookies or seasoned veterans—receive equal coaching, respect, and opportunities to grow.
Football Team Divisions: Tailored Development by Age and Grade
To ensure age-appropriate coaching and competition, our teams are divided into three divisions:
New Tornadoes Tiny Tacklers (non-contact) (Grades K-2)
Get your little athletes ready for tackle football with our NEW Tiny Tacklers program—a fun and engaging way for kids in Kindergarten through 2nd grade to learn the fundamentals of football in a non-contact environment!
Age Requirements: Players must be 5-8 years old and enrolled in grades K-2.
What to Expect:
Skill Development – Passing, catching, handoffs, footwork, blocking & tackling
Safe & Fun – No pads or equipment needed, all drills use tackling dummies & blocking pads
Football Basics – Learn positions, formations, and hole numbers
1 Hour Per Week – Runs alongside the tackle football season
Parents/guardians are required to stay for the practice
This is the perfect way to introduce young athletes to the game in a safe, structured, and exciting way!

Level Playing Field: Players compete against opponents with similar experience levels.
More Playing Time: Smaller rosters and tailored matchups ensure that every player gets on the field.
Skill Development: Players receive personalized coaching to match their experience and learning pace.
Football Coaching Philosophy: Fundamentals, Respect, and Personal Growth
Our coaching staff is composed of a head coach and 5-8 assistant coaches per team, allowing for individualized attention and mentorship. Our philosophy is to:
Teach the Fundamentals: Players learn proper techniques, strategies, and rules of the game.
Emphasize Values: We focus on respect, sportsmanship, teamwork, and never giving up—both on and off the field.
Build Confidence: We aim to help players develop self-assurance, resilience, and a love for the game.
League Participation: Northeast Junior High Football League (NJHFL)
Our program is proud to be a part of the Northeast Junior High Football League, where we compete against other teams in a structured and competitive environment. The league promotes fair play and development while maintaining safety and integrity. Learn more about NJHFL and our league rules for each division
Football Season Schedule: Practice, Games, and Playoffs
Practice Start: The season kicks off with practices beginning in the second week of August 11th.
Games Begin: The first game, a jamboree (scrimmage), takes place last week of August.
Regular Season: Games continue weekly through early November.

Weight Restrictions for Ball Carriers: Safety and Fair Play
To maintain safety and fairness, the NJHFL enforces weight restrictions for ball carriers:
Youth Division: Maximum weight of 96 lbs (excluding tight ends).
Junior Division: Maximum weight of 125 lbs (excluding tight ends).
All potential ball carriers are weighed in at the Official Weigh-in during the annual Junior Jamboree. Attendance at this event is mandatory for all teams, ensuring compliance with league rules.

Football SAFETY
At our youth football program, player safety is not just a priority—it is our highest commitment. We understand that parents entrust us with the safety and well-being of their children, and we take this responsibility seriously. Our approach to safety encompasses proper training, certified equipment, and strict adherence to safety protocols, ensuring a safe and positive experience for every young athlete.
Football Certified Coaching and Training
USA Football Certification: All of our coaches complete USA Football's "Heads Up" safety training, which focuses on safe tackling techniques, injury prevention, and emergency response.
Concussion Awareness: Coaches are trained to recognize signs of concussions and understand the protocols for safe return-to-play procedures.
First Aid and CPR Certified Staff: At least one EMS is on the sidelines at games examining players if necessary. EMS is certified in First Aid and CPR, ready to respond to any emergencies.
Proper Equipment and Gear
Top-Quality Equipment: We provide helmets and pads that meet or exceed the latest safety standards.
Regular Equipment Inspections: Helmets and pads are inspected before each season to ensure they are in optimal condition.
Proper Fit and Enforcement: Coaches help players properly fit their equipment and ensure they wear it safely during practice and games.
Football Practice and Game Safety Protocols
Progressive Practice Structure: Players gradually move into full contact, with non-contact drills in the initial weeks to build confidence and skills safely (timeline varies with each division).
Practice policies: 3 practices are required before any contact, 7 practices to play in jamboree (scrimmage), 10 practices to play in game. This rule applies to players starting at any point in the season.
Heat and Hydration Policies: We require frequent mandatory water breaks as well as monitor heat index.
Concussion Management and Prevention
Safe Tackling Techniques: We emphasize "Heads Up" tackling, which reduces the risk of head and neck injuries.
Clear Return-to-Play Guidelines: Any player suspected of having a concussion will not return to play without medical clearance.
Football Communication and Transparency
Injury Reporting: Coaches communicate promptly with parents about any injuries or concerns.
Parental Involvement: We encourage parents to voice any safety concerns and work collaboratively to address them.
Football Youth Division Safety Measures: Coaches on the Field and Special Rules
Tornadoes Tiny Tacklers (Grades K-2) is non-contact learning environment
In our Youth Division (Grades 2-4), safety is a top priority. Coaches are allowed on the field during games to provide real-time guidance and ensure proper positioning and safe play. The North East Junior Football League (NJHFL) has implemented special rules to maximize safety such as:
No Punt Returns: Reduces high-speed collisions.
No Defenders in the A-Gap: Protects the center and quarterback.
Mandatory 3-Point Stance: Promotes stability and safety.
No Quarterback Sneaks or Crab Blocks: Prevents dangerous plays.
These are just a few examples of many rules created to ensure the safety of our youngest players. Read all the rules here
Our Promise to Parents
We know that safety is a top concern for parents, and we are dedicated to providing a secure environment where young athletes can learn, grow, and enjoy the game of football. From our well-trained coaching staff to our proactive safety measures, every decision we make is guided by our commitment to player safety.

Why increase the registration fees for 2025?
While our goal is to keep the program as low cost as possible to continue providing a safe and high-quality football program, we must increase registration fees due to rising costs for referees, paramedics, top-rated helmets and pads, uniforms, field lighting, and equipment storage. The previous fee structure was unsustainable, and without this adjustment, we would be unable to maintain the safety your children require. Please remember that all coaches and board members are volunteers, and every dollar goes directly back into supporting your children in the program.

Football Pre-Season Camp
We typically hold pre-season non-contact conditioning camp before the start of the season. All new and returning players are encouraged to attend any/all of the days that they can. Usually held for 3 days for approx 2 hours at a local field. Players are only required to wear shirts, shorts, cleats. If we have any additional camps available, we will post those as we have more information.
Pre-Season Practice (August)
Communication from coaches, football director, board will happen through Band App set up for each division (youth, Junior, Senior). Parents should regularly check the posts and ask any questions through their divisions chat.
First Two Weeks: Monday through Friday, approximately 2 hours per sessions typically starting around 5:30 (may change for each division)
Practice is held behind the Timberlane High School - location of practice on the large fields is dependent on soccer games but typically in the back toward the woodline.
Be early to practice by at least 15 min to make time to put on gear. Pads should be on and helmets strapped at the specified practice time.
Parents may watch from the edge of the field but may not yell or attempt to disrupt practice in any way. Parents may also drop their child off with the expectation of returning before the specified practice end and you must be available if called.
Players will need 1-2 bottles of water.
Progression: Begin with non-contact drills, progressing to full pads by the second week
Players will be exhausted in these difficult first two weeks depending on conditioning at the beginning of the season. Sleep and nutrition are critical. It's equally important that they are encouraged to stick with it through the tears. They will all have tears. The grit they develop in the first two weeks will be the base for their success later in the season and later in life after football.
Jamboree Event (First scrimmage):
Takes place on 23rd or 24th of August
A one-day, three-hour scrimmage event playing against other league teams
Typically scheduled for Saturday
Please ensure you are washing all your players equipment every week at minimum to avoid damage including helmets. Just hot soapy water will suffice.
Regular Season Practice (September - November)
Practice Frequency: Start four days per week then transition to three days per week (late september), approximately 2 hours per session
Typical Schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday typically starting around 5:30 PM
Adaptations for Sunset or weather: Practices may start earlier or be held under field lights as days get shorter. We practice in the heat, rain, cold, snow with few exceptions for player safety.
Game Schedule
Frequency: One game per weekend, except during a bye week
Game Times: Saturday or Sunday. Game times depend on the division with youth starting in the mornings. Home games are generally held on Sundays. Game times will be announced typically week before.
Game locations: All of our divisions play in the Northeast Junior High Football League. This league is composed of teams from southern New Hampshire, as well as some seacoast New Hampshire teams including Rochester, Dover, Bedford, Portsmouth, Timberlane, Winnacunnet, Derry, to name a few. Half of the games will require traveling to these towns. The farthest drive from is approximately 45 minutes, and most are closer. Half of the games will be at home and played at the high school field.

FAQ
-
3 practices are required before any contact, 7 practices to play in jamboree (scrimmage), 10 practices to play in game. This rule applies to players starting at any point in the season.
-
The first few weeks of practice are essential to getting a good start to the season and developing proper techniques. These weeks are instrumental to player development. Players who attend practice and have knowledge of the game usually get most of the playing time early in the season. Particularly given the fact that it is difficult to judge a player's ability and physical condition when they are not practicing. In the early days of the season especially for younger players to understand the game for their safety and others safety. Football is unique as players depend on each other for their safety and as stated, safety is our number one priority.
-
There is an expectation that football will be the priority for the entire season. As stated before, the players that are at practices and learning the plays are usually the players that get most of the playing time in season. In the early days of the season especially for younger players to understand the game for their safety and others safety. Football is unique as players depend on each other for their own safety and as stated safety is our number one priority.
-
There are no minimum playing requirements, and best efforts will be made to put players in positions to succeed. Great efforts will be made to have kids play a reasonable amount. Having a JV and varsity at each division ensures all players have the opportunity for playing time.
-
As a matter of safety, those players who make practices will be given priority in playing time. During practice coaches see players exemplify our values such as respect, sportsmanship, teamwork, and never giving up no matter what their skill level is going to get the most playing time. Showing up and working your hardest is the recipe to get on the field.
-
Tornadoes' first concern is the safety of the players. There are weight restrictions for the players who can run, throw or receive a pass with the ball. The philosophy of Tornadoes is to ensure every player gets a chance to play either on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. It’s left up to the team's coaching staff to place each player in a position in which they will succeed and have fun. All players will likely learn multiple positions during the season. If you have any questions about the position your child is playing, please speak with your child’s head coach.
-
Players are not required to use our provided equipment. If you would like to upgrade to a certain brand of equipment above what is provided, that is your choice.
-
Yes. In an effort to make the player experience special, a banquet and dinner is held at the conclusion of the season. This is a special event, with great speakers and continued team and community bonding. It's a great time.
-
Yes, please reach out to the Tornadoes board with specifics about your child and you will be pointed in the right direction
-
Coaches decide whether players are placed on JV or Varsity based on:
Skill Level: Evaluated through drills and practice performance.
Experience: Newer players often start on JV to build fundamentals.
Physical and Developmental Readiness: Ensures safe and fair competition.
The goal is balanced teams where all players receive coaching and playtime. Players may move between JV and Varsity as they develop throughout the season.
-
No problem! Our program welcomes beginners and focuses on teaching fundamentals and building confidence, regardless of experience.
-
NJHFL draw areas are based on SAU. If your SAU doesn't have a team in NJHFL, Tornadoes organization will have to submit a waiver for your participation which will most likely get approved. For example, Kingston is in Sanborn SAU, which does not have an NJHFL team, so Kingston residents can play on Tornadoes with a Waiver. Exeter is in the Exeter SAU, which does have an NJHFL program, therefore Exeter residents cannot play for Tornadoes.
-
Please reach out to our Fundraising director to get involved.
-
Head Coaches may appoint assistant coaches as long as they are USA Football certified with a background check well ahead of season start. The Head Coach selection process is run by the Tornadoes Board and all Head Coaches are elected by the Tornadoes Board of Directors
-
Coaches will be attending equipment pickup to ensure a proper fit. If its determined later that players equipment still doesn’t fit, parents will have many opportunities at the beginning of the season to speak to our equipment coordinator who will attend practice or reach out to her directly.
-
It’s your responsibility to reach out to our equipment manager should you not be able to attend pickup/drop off. Equipment deposits checks will be cashed by the specified date if equipment is not returned, additional charges may incur should equipment not be returned or returned in poor condition.
-
All of our rules and bylaws are documented on NJHFLs website.
